Important Paintings and Contemporary Art

Thursday 29th November 2018

6.30pm - 3 Abbey Street, Newton, Auckland

ART+OBJECT's final art catalogue for 2018 is spearheaded by an unprecedented offering of three key ‘Bird’ paintings by Auckland painter Don Binney (1940 – 2012), which all date from the artist’s most celebrated period of 1965 – 1970. The catalogue also includes an insightful essay on the artist by Gregory O’Brien along with vintage contextual photographs from the Binney family archive. This catalogue is perhaps our strongest of the calendar year and includes many fine works with interesting provenance including: a major Ralph Hotere painting from the collection of the artist’s gallerist, Sue Crockford; an important Colin McCahon three panel painting on the market for the first time since the late 1960s; two classic A. Lois White varnished watercolours repatriated from London for the auction; one of Jeffrey Harris’ most important paintings, long held in the artist’s personal collection; and a Milan Mrkusich ‘Corner’ painting from the collection of Gordon Walters. Further contemporary and modern highlights include major works by: Yvonne Todd, Richard Killeen, Bill Hammond, Seraphine Pick, Stephen Bambury, Karl Maughan, Michael Parekowhai, Peter Robinson, Heather Straka and more.
