New Collectors Art

Wednesday 24th October 2018

6.30pm - 3 Abbey Street, Newton, Auckland

ART+OBJECT is delighted to announce it will offer around fifty works from the estate of the well-known and much-loved painter, print maker, ceramicist, animator, jeweller and graphic designer Ted Dutch (1928 – 2008). Dutch’s distinctive and signature style drew freely from the worlds of graphic design, cartoons and pop imagery and his light-hearted choices in subject matter saw him create some of the warmest and most humorous responses to the anxieties of twentieth century urban life. Born in London, Dutch graduated from St Martin’s School of Art in London and initially worked as a film animator, an occupation that informed his practice throughout his life. At the age of 23 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in London and emigrated to New Zealand soon thereafter. Stimulated by the technological advancements in screenprinting Dutch began producing fine art screenprints as early as 1962 and soon after he was also painting and experimenting with ceramic sculpture. Much of Dutch’s work is notable for the manner in which it conflates humour and joy with the anxieties of technological and social change and progress. The artist gained international recognition late in his life.

The spring auction of New Collectors Art will take place alongside the sale of the Ted Dutch Collection. It features artworks from The Untitled Collection Group, who are disbanding after a collecting period of 10 years. We are also delighted to offer selected items from the collector Richard Kittelty, and art from the estate of the late John C. Wilson, a well-known Auckland architect. This will be a diverse offering of modern and contemporary art – an auction not to be missed.
