Wednesday 6th December 2017
12.00pm - 3 Abbey Street, Newton, Auckand
Art+Object’s final Rare Book auction for 2017 will be held on Wednesday 6th December at 12:00pm noon. The sale is promising to be an interesting one with several major items already assigned including:
- A rare copy of George French Angas’ The New Zealanders Illustrated. London 1846 - 1847 in the original 10 parts and wrappers as first issued (illustrated).
- George Hamilton – A Voyage Round the World in His Majesty’s Frigate Pandora. Berwick 1793, first edition.
- An archive of manuscripts and letters relating to the Franklin Expedition of 1845, coming through family provenance from John Brown - "the zealous and unbiased chronicler of the deeds of arctic heroes" [Sir R.I. Murchison]. Brown was a noted advocate of expeditions in search of Sir John Franklin. He defined the area which the expedition was ultimately found to have reached, but was not attended to at the time. The collection includes a large number of letters from various leaders of the numerous expeditions sent out to search: a letter to Brown from Lady Jane Franklin, a long and impassioned plea and letters to the Admiralty from Robert McCormick requesting permission to mount an expedition of search, an original inscribed pencil sketch by McCormick of Erebus and Terror Bay, a copy of Robert McCormick’s rare book ‘Narrative of a Boat Expedition up The Wellington Channel in Search of Sir John Franklin’ (London 1854).
Selected further entries for this auction are invited until Friday 3 November.
