ART+OBJECT are pleased to announce their third Rare Book auction of the year will include another selection of early and rare New Zealand books. Early consignments include a small but splendid collection of natural history books, notable are several titles by Sir Walter Lawry Buller including a first edition of A History of the Birds of New Zealand, and a superb set of the second edition as well as a fine set of the Supplement. Other notable items are fine copies of G.V. Hudsons ‘Moths and Butterflies’ first and second editions and the Supplement, and Mrs Charles Hetley’s ‘The Native Flowers of New Zealand’ in a contemporary deluxe binding. Also of particular interest is a watercolour After John and Elizabeth Gould titled ‘Apteryx Australis’ [southern brown kiwi] Shaw, circa 1840’s.

The sale also features a fine selection of New Zealand ‘classic’ first editions, Ernest Dieffenbach’s ‘Travels in New Zealand’, Polacks ‘New Zealand’ and Manners and Customs of the New Zealanders’, John Savage’s ‘Some Account of New Zealand’, John Hawkesworth’s ‘An Account of the Voyages…’ third edition 1785, Nicholas’s ‘A Narrative of a Voyage to New Zealand’, Maunsell’s ‘Grammar of the New Zealand Language’ [1842]. An unusual and rare consignment is William Colenso’s spirited plea for clemency for Kereopa, ‘Fiat Justitia’ published in 1871.
